Job Description

Beneficial Designs is searching for a part-time engineer to assist with wheelchair testing. We are searching for someone with an engineering background to perform testing of manual and powered wheelchairs for static and dynamic stability, durability, range, obstacle climbing ability, braking, energy consumption, overall mass and dimensions, maximum speed, maximum acceleration, seating dimensions, climatic testing, electrical system integrity, etc. The candidate should also have an interest in standards work and a strong belief in accessibility for people with disabilities. Knowledge/experience of Accessibility Guidelines and other standards would be helpful but not required.

Peter Axelson of Beneficial Designs is the Chair of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) Standards Committee on Wheelchairs and is a delegate to the International Organization on Standardization (ISO) for Wheelchair Standards. Beneficial Designs performs testing RESNA wheelchair standards for the United States.

Summary of Wheelchair Standards

Wheelchair standards are specific test procedures used to provide information about the performance, safety, and dimensions of wheelchairs. These procedures ensure minimum wheelchair performance and safety levels, and provide a basis for consumers and clinicians to compare products when selecting a wheelchair. Wheelchair manufacturers conduct standard wheelchair testing on a voluntary basis and as required by funding agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs and Medicare.
