Wheelchair Testing Engineer Position
Job Description
Beneficial Designs is searching for a
part-time engineer to assist with wheelchair testing. We are
searching for someone with an engineering background to
perform testing of manual and powered wheelchairs for static
and dynamic stability, durability, range, obstacle climbing
ability, braking, energy consumption, overall mass and
dimensions, maximum speed, maximum acceleration, seating
dimensions, climatic testing, electrical system integrity,
etc. The candidate should also have an interest in standards
work and a strong belief in accessibility for people with
disabilities. Knowledge/experience of Accessibility
Guidelines and other standards would be helpful but not
required.
Peter
Axelson of Beneficial Designs is the Chair of the
Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society
of North America (RESNA) Standards Committee on Wheelchairs
and is a delegate to the International Organization on
Standardization (ISO) for Wheelchair Standards. Beneficial
Designs performs testing RESNA wheelchair standards for the
United States.Summary of Wheelchair Standards
Wheelchair standards are specific test
procedures used to provide information about the
performance, safety, and dimensions of wheelchairs. These
procedures ensure minimum wheelchair performance and safety
levels, and provide a basis for consumers and clinicians to
compare products when selecting a wheelchair. Wheelchair
manufacturers conduct standard wheelchair testing on a
voluntary basis and as required by funding agencies such as
the Department of Veterans Affairs and Medicare.
