the need
Are you looking for a more comfortable leg bag or do you have latex allergies?
Hi, I am Peter Axelson, a rehabilitation engineer and designer. I regularly write standards, test mobility equipment, use a wheelchair, and manage Beneficial Designs, Inc. After using latex rubber gloves for almost 40 years, I began to develop a latex allergy.
The latex rubber on my leg bag and tubing would press against my leg, causing my skin to react. In the beginning it was only redness, but then blisters began to appear. At this point I realized that my skin was reacting to the latex in the rubber leg bag and tubing. In addition, the leg back would stick to the skin on my leg.

the solution
When I switched to using vinyl and nitrile gloves, I began thinking about the latex rubber leg bags. They work so darn well that I did not want to give them up. When I had won a sewing project from a kind friend, Sherry of And Sew On, I decided to ask her to make me a leg bag cover.
The covers Sherry made for me work well. The fleece cover allows my skin to breath in the summer and stay warm in the winter, while preventing my skin from sticking to and reacting with the latex. I also found some small diameter cotton sleeve material to cover the latex tubing—the kind that is used for casting and arm, only smaller. I have included some images showing what the cover looks like by itself, on the leg bag, and on my leg. The material in the images is an odd-ball material I found with a wolf pattern. My suggestion would be to get at least a couple of covers so you can wash one while you are wearing the other. If you are bold enough to wear them around the house, you might want to use your imagination on the fleece.

rubber bands (rather than plastic clamps)
Black rubber bands contrast the amber color of the rubber tubing, making it easier see and wrap in different lighting scenarios. The plastic clamps that come with the leg bag can open up accidentally, causing injury if something pushes the clamp into your leg.
