hike through history
Located in Limestone County, Alabama, the Richard Martin Trail travels 10.9 miles from Piney Chapel Rd near Athens up through Elkmont and ends at the Tennessee border. Once a railroad, this historic trail passes the famous Civil War site where the Battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle took place. Open to hikers, bikers, equestrians, and more, the Richard Martin Trail provides users the opportunity to enjoy physical activity, nature, and history all at the same time.
Beneficial Designs assessed the Richard Martin Trail and access routes, along with associated trailhead amenities. Two 36 in. x 24 in. Trail Access Information (TAI) maps were printed to be mounted at both the Elkmont and Piney Chapel Rd trailheads, detailing the level of access provided and objective information about the trail and its amenities for users. Now with objective trail data, the Richard Martin Trail provides the information necessary for people of varying abilities to make informed decisions about their use of the trail.
